What could be happening?

One of the most common reasons for experiencing a hole in the tooth is tooth decay. Tooth decay is the process where acidic waste products created by bacteria damage the tooth. If left unchecked, a point can be reached where enough mineral content in the tooth is lost and a defect (a hole or a cavity) forms on the tooth's surface. The usual pattern that decay follows can be seen in the diagram below.

If decay is left for a period of time it can spread to the nerve inside the tooth and cause infections (as can be seen in the Figure 3 & 4), Root Canal Therapy will also be required to restore the tooth.

If your teeth have been damaged as a result of decay we can help restore the tooth so that it looks and functions just like an ideal natural tooth.

Treatment options can include simple adjustments to the tooth’s surface with the addition of a tooth coloured resin. In some cases placing a crown (or a cap) on the tooth may be more appropriate.

In some cases the tooth may not be restorable and may need to be taken out. If this is the case we can provide quick tooth extractions in a peaceful and calming environment. This is why it is important to have any potential holes in your teeth investigated by a dentist. Waiting until tooth pain is experienced before fixing holes in your teeth will cost more and take a lot more time to fix down the track.
